The short answer
Polyaspartic is one of the most talked-about and most misunderstood products in the floor coating industry. Used right, it’s a UV-stable, chemical-resistant, fast-curing topcoat that outperforms epoxy at the surface. Used as a single-product “1-day” system (primer + topcoat), it sacrifices the deep concrete bond that only epoxy delivers. At HFC we use polyaspartic the way it was designed: as the topcoat over a properly cured epoxy base. 2-day install. 15-year installation warranty. Starting at $7/sq ft with a $1,500 minimum.
01 · Why it works
Why Houston property owners choose polyaspartic floor coatings.
- UV stability. Houston garages, patios, and commercial spaces get intense sunlight most of the year. Polyaspartic resists yellowing and degradation from UV, keeping the finish clear and consistent — especially important for south/west-facing spaces and outdoor installs.
- Fast topcoat cure time. Polyaspartic cures faster than an epoxy topcoat. Applied on day two — after the epoxy base has bonded and hardened — it reaches a functional cure quickly, keeping total project time short without cutting adhesion corners underneath.
- Superior abrasion resistance. Vehicles, equipment, foot traffic — the polyaspartic surface absorbs daily wear. Its flexibility and hardness work together to resist scratches, scuffs, and surface damage that degrade lesser coatings over time.
- Chemical resistance. Oil, gasoline, brake fluid, and solvents sit on polyaspartic without penetrating or staining. In Houston’s heat these chemicals become more aggressive — polyaspartic handles it.
- Clarity and gloss retention. Polyaspartic maintains optical clarity for years. It doesn’t cloud, haze, or dull the way some coatings can after prolonged heat and humidity. The decorative flake or color beneath stays visible and vibrant.
02 · How we install it
Our 5-step polyaspartic floor coating process.
Slab evaluation
Inspect the concrete for cracks, moisture issues, previous coatings, and Houston-specific conditions (clay soil movement, moisture migration).
Mechanical grinding
Diamond grinding to create the CSP 2–3 surface profile that allows molecular adhesion. No acid etching.
Crack & divot repair
Every crack and imperfection gets chased and repaired — critical in Houston where clay soil movement stresses slabs over time.
Epoxy base coat + flake
100% solids epoxy applied and cured overnight. Decorative flake broadcast if selected. This is the adhesion layer.
Polyaspartic topcoat
Day two: polyaspartic topcoat seals everything in, provides UV, abrasion, chemical resistance, and final gloss. Walk-on in 24 hr.
03 · Two approaches
How we use polyaspartic vs. how others use it.
There are two common approaches to polyaspartic floor coatings in the Houston residential and commercial market. Both exist for a reason. Here’s the honest breakdown:
The 1-day polyaspartic-only approach
Some companies use polyaspartic for both the base coat and the topcoat. Because polyaspartic cures quickly, both layers can go down in a single day. Appeal: speed and convenience.
Trade-off: polyaspartic’s bond to concrete is weaker than epoxy’s. In Houston’s heat, the already-short polyaspartic pot life shrinks further, reducing how deep the primer can penetrate.
Want a real 1-day install? Our 1-day fast-cure system keeps an epoxy base (accelerated cure) instead of going poly-only. Best of both worlds.
Our approach: epoxy base + polyaspartic topcoat
Day one: 100% solids epoxy base coat, cured overnight. Day two: polyaspartic topcoat. Two days minimum, real epoxy bond underneath.
Epoxy has longer open time than polyaspartic — more time to flow into the ground concrete profile for deeper mechanical adhesion. Polyaspartic cures rapidly, which is an advantage as a topcoat but works against you as a base coat.
Each material where its chemistry performs best. 15-year installation warranty reflects that engineering decision.
04 · Warranty
Backed by a 15-year installation warranty.
Every polyaspartic floor we install is backed by our 15-year installation warranty. That warranty covers workmanship and adhesion of the coating system to your concrete slab.
We can offer this warranty because we trust our process. The 2-day epoxy-plus-polyaspartic system isn’t a marketing decision — it’s an engineering one. Proper surface prep, quality materials applied to spec, and adequate cure times produce a floor that lasts.
Warranty excludes damage from misuse, impact, abrasion beyond normal wear, hydrostatic pressure, and alterations by others. Original homeowner only. Full terms on the warranty page.
05 · FAQ
Polyaspartic floor coating questions.
What is the difference between polyaspartic and epoxy?
Different chemistries with different strengths. Epoxy offers strong concrete adhesion and excellent chemical resistance. Polyaspartic offers UV stability, faster cure, and superior abrasion resistance. Neither replaces the other — the strongest systems use both in layered roles (epoxy base, polyaspartic topcoat).
Do you offer 1-day polyaspartic floor coatings?
Not as a polyaspartic-only system. Polyaspartic bonds to concrete less aggressively than epoxy, so we don’t use it as a primer. If you need a 1-day install, see our 1-day fast-cure system — fast-cure epoxy primer + polyaspartic topcoat, installed in a day, with the real epoxy bond.
Is polyaspartic better than epoxy?
Not better — different. Polyaspartic outperforms epoxy on UV resistance, cure speed, and abrasion resistance. Epoxy outperforms polyaspartic on concrete adhesion and working time. The strongest systems use both in their best roles.
How long does a polyaspartic topcoat last?
Applied over a properly cured epoxy base with correct surface prep, a polyaspartic topcoat can last 15+ years. UV stability prevents yellowing; abrasion resistance handles daily wear from vehicles, foot traffic, and equipment. Our 15-year installation warranty reflects that expectation.
Can polyaspartic coatings handle Houston’s heat?
Yes. Polyaspartic resists UV degradation, doesn’t soften in extreme heat, and maintains clarity and gloss through Houston summers. The fast cure time is actually an advantage in warm weather — the topcoat sets quickly even on hot days, reducing dust and debris issues during cure.
