The short answer
Houston outdoor concrete takes a beating: 100°F+ summer surface temps, 90%+ humidity driving moisture up through the slab, UV degradation, 50"+ annual rainfall, and pool chemicals. Standard interior epoxy fails outdoors here. Our outdoor system uses an epoxy base (for adhesion) + UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat (for weather resistance) + slip-resistant aggregate built in. 2-day minimum install. 15-year installation warranty. Starting at $7/sq ft with a $1,500 project minimum.
01 · Why outdoor
Why Houston property owners choose patio + pool deck coatings.
- UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat prevents fading and yellowing. Standard epoxy yellows and chalks under direct sunlight. Our polyaspartic topcoat is formulated for UV resistance, keeping patios and pool decks looking clean and consistent for years.
- Slip-resistant texture critical around pools. Safety around water is non-negotiable. We incorporate slip-resistant aggregates into the topcoat so your pool deck provides traction even when wet. Built in, not an upgrade.
- Waterproofing against Houston rain and moisture. Houston averages 50+ inches of rainfall per year. A sealed, coated surface prevents water from penetrating the concrete — reducing cracking, spalling, and freeze-thaw damage during cold snaps.
- Heat-resistant surface that stays cooler underfoot. Dark uncoated concrete absorbs and radiates heat. A reflective coating system reduces surface temperature, making your patio more comfortable to walk on barefoot during long summers.
- Restorative transformation of damaged concrete. If your patio already shows cracks and stains, coating is restorative, not just cosmetic. We repair cracks before coating — turning liability into a surface that looks intentional and performs for 15+ years.
02 · How we build it
Our 5-step outdoor coating process.
Outdoor slabs present challenges interior floors don’t: algae, tree sap, old sealers, elevated moisture vapor, UV stress, temperature cycling. Same five-step process, adapted for outdoor realities.
Evaluate slab, drainage, moisture
Assess age, damage, contamination, drainage pattern, moisture vapor transmission (elevated on Houston outdoor concrete), sun exposure.
Mechanical grinding
Removes years of dirt, algae, efflorescence, and UV-degraded sealers. Opens concrete pores for coating bond. No acid etching.
Repair cracks + divots
Every crack and spall filled with polyurea or epoxy-based fillers. Unrepaired cracks are entry points for water that accelerate further damage.
Epoxy base + flake
Epoxy base for adhesion and chemical resistance — especially important on pool decks exposed to chlorine, salt, pool chemicals. Full cure before topcoat.
UV-stable polyaspartic + slip aggregate
Polyaspartic topcoat with slip-resistant aggregates incorporated. UV-stability, abrasion resistance, traction when wet.
03 · Houston-specific
Why Houston outdoor floors fail — and why this system doesn’t.
Houston’s climate is one of the toughest environments in the country for outdoor concrete surfaces. Four reasons most outdoor coatings fail in this market:
- Humidity above 90% accelerates moisture vapor transmission through the slab from below. Moisture vapor is the #1 cause of coating delamination on outdoor concrete. Our system tolerates it; standard interior systems don’t.
- Summer surface temps above 130°F cause daily thermal cycling. The coating has to move with the concrete without cracking or delaminating. Our polyaspartic topcoat has the flexibility for this range.
- 50+ inches of annual rainfall means constant wet-dry cycling. Each cycle pushes moisture into and out of the slab, testing adhesion with every weather event.
- Extreme UV index 6+ months per year from April through October. Standard interior epoxy yellows and chalks within months. UV-stable polyaspartic is the difference between a coating that lasts and one that fails in the first year.
Standard interior coatings fail outdoors in Houston. That’s material-science reality, not marketing. We select UV-stable, moisture-tolerant systems specifically engineered for outdoor exposure in this climate.
04 · Warranty
Backed by a 15-year installation warranty.
Every patio and pool deck coating we install comes with a 15-year installation warranty. If our workmanship or installation process causes a failure, we come back and make it right.
Standard exclusions: misuse, impact, abrasion beyond normal wear, hydrostatic pressure, moisture vapor transmission from pre-existing conditions (we test for this at install), alterations by others. Outdoor-specific note: some specialty exterior pigments have a different UV-stability spec than the topcoat itself; we publish that spec on the estimate if it applies. Full warranty terms.
05 · FAQ
Patio + pool deck coating questions.
Can epoxy be used on outdoor patios?
Epoxy alone is not suitable for outdoor use in Houston — it yellows and chalks under UV. But epoxy as a base coat topped with UV-stable polyaspartic? That’s exactly what works. Epoxy does the adhesion and chemical resistance. Polyaspartic does the UV protection. Two-part system, best of both materials.
Is pool deck coating slippery when wet?
No. Slip resistance is built into every pool deck coating — we incorporate slip-resistant aggregates into the topcoat so the surface maintains traction when wet. Safety around water is a baseline, not an upgrade. Texture is calibrated to be effective without being uncomfortable underfoot.
How does Houston weather affect outdoor floor coatings?
Every way that matters — heat causes thermal cycling, humidity drives moisture vapor through the slab, 50+" rainfall creates wet-dry cycling, UV degrades coatings not formulated for outdoor exposure. We evaluate moisture, sun exposure, and drainage before selecting a system and use materials specifically rated for outdoor conditions in Houston.
Can you coat a covered vs. uncovered patio?
Both. Approach differs based on exposure. Uncovered patios need UV-stable, waterproof systems with slip-resistant texture — no shortcuts. Covered patios have more flexibility since UV exposure is reduced, but moisture, humidity, and temperature still apply. Partially covered patios often need UV-stable materials across the whole surface to avoid uneven fading at the transition zone.
